Our Story

The RoomPlace: Past, Present and Future

Serving Chicagoland and greater Indianapolis since 1912. Sam Berman founded Harlem Furniture by first selling furniture door-to-door. He then opened and ran a single Harlem Furniture store until 1985, when Harlem Furniture began its expansion. Harlem was changed to "The RoomPlace" to reflect our company's strength in room packaging. Since that time The RoomPlace has continued to open new stores throughout Chicagoland and Indiana. The RoomPlace continues to succeed in Chicago's highly competitive furniture market by offering the value-conscious consumer excellent service and selection at affordable prices.

Now headquartered in Lombard, IL, The RoomPlace operates 24 furniture showrooms throughout Chicagoland and Indianapolis. Our newest location is located in Homewood, becoming our 18th location in Illinois. We also operate a 300,000 sq. ft. state of the art distribution center in Romeoville Illinois.

The RoomPlace makes furniture buying easy and convenient for Chicago and Indianapolis furniture customers, with our showrooms featuring completely furnished, coordinated rooms created by a team of experienced designers. This allows The RoomPlace customers to experience a total-room concept when furniture shopping, and select the perfect design that meets their individual tastes and needs. Customers not only save on every piece of furniture they buy from The RoomPlace, they also save even more when they buy a complete room. Indianapolis and Chicago furniture shoppers who choose The RoomPlace also enjoy immediate furniture delivery.

Finding Furniture to Fit Your Style

Selecting the right home furniture for any room is all about understanding your personal style. If you have an idea of what you like but don't quite know how to describe it, a quick lesson in four categories of furniture styles below will get you on track to finding the ideal pieces and accents tailored to your tastes. Whether you want casual contemporary bedroom furniture for your Chicago home or a comfortable country living room, you'll be able to figure it out after a quick lesson from The RoomPlace below.

Casual Contemporary

Are you drawn to a refined understatement that emphasizes softer lines and unfussy architecture? If so, your furniture style is probably casual contemporary. These types of furniture pieces take subtle cues from retro, vintage, art deco and mid-century trends and update them for today's home. Light and medium wood finishes, as well as darker veneers, are softened by gentle curvature that characterizes casual contemporary furniture items from the bedroom dresser to your media center. You can choose from various inviting textures of upholstery and leather to complete the look.

Tried-and-True Traditional

Make no mistake: traditional isn't synonymous with boring. Conversely, traditional furniture is highly ornamental, borrowing from old-world European craftsmanship. Think about luxurious bedroom furniture featuring mahogany, oak and cherry canopy beds, and decadent detailing with leaving, acanthus and serpentine shapes. Traditional style furniture is grand from top to bottom, standing on curved and fluted legs and upholstered in rich velvets, silks and damasks.

Comfortable Country

A country style sweeps you away from the everyday hustle and bustle into irresistibly comfortable surroundings. Typified by rustic finishes, pastel palettes and natural wood beauty, country style furniture has an inherently homespun feel. Living room furniture often centers on deep-seated, overstuffed cotton and linen loveseats and couches. Quilted detailing, denim, plaids and floral patterning dress up this down home decor.

Chic Modern

For those who are always a step ahead of the latest tastes and trends, chic modern is a steadfast choice. Paying homage to design geniuses of the mid-century, modern style furniture stresses clean lines and geometrical shaping that stuns with its overstated simplicity. Low-lying beds with unornamented headboards, tight-backed leather couches on exposed legging and glass-topped coffee tables in surprising shapes dominate the modern landscape. Even dining room furniture gets a modern makeover with furniture deals providing contrasting glass and sleek wood inlays on tables, and leather upholstered chairs in bold whites, turquoise and tangerine.

Now that you've figured out what furniture style fits your home's personality, stop by one of our 24 Indiana and Illinois furniture stores to see what we have in our showrooms to match your preferred style. Our friendly team at any location of The RoomPlace will be happy to help you find what you're looking for.
